Fast food’s effects are an easy choice when you’re tired, busy, or just feel like you deserve a reward. However, eating fast food can be more harmful than you might think. In the short term, it can cause weight gain and heartburn. In the long term, however, it can lead to serious health problems such as cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Here’s what happens to your body when you eat fast food regularly and how to avoid it.

Increases Chances of Obesity
In a new study, researchers found that consuming fast food is associated with weight gain and obesity. The researchers analyzed data from nearly 4,500 middle-aged adults who participated in three different long-term studies between 1991 and 2006.
The participants’ diets were analyzed over that time period, as well as their body mass index BMI scores. Those who ate fast food two or more times per week had a BMI score of 5.6 which is in the overweight range compared to 5.4 for those who didn’t eat any fast food at all during that time frame; even after controlling for things like total calories consumed and exercise levels, those results held true.
Makes you Depressed
Not only are Americans getting fatter, but we’re also getting unhappier. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that more than 30 percent of adults reported having at least one symptom of depression in 2012.
While it’s unclear exactly why so many people seem depressed, researchers are now looking at how certain foods can trigger mood swings.
A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that participants who consumed high amounts of Fast food’s effects had a 29 percent higher risk of developing depression over a four-year period compared with those who rarely ate fast food.
And another study showed an association between unhealthy diets and a higher risk of suicide attempts among teen girls.
Damages your Liver
The American Liver Foundation reports that when you eat food, it’s broken down into three substances in your small intestine: fat, protein, and carbohydrates. However, if you consume excessive amounts of fast food with an emphasis on unhealthy fats and oils, your liver may not be able to properly break down all of those toxins.
This can lead to a buildup of harmful fatty deposits that cause cirrhosis. Consuming a high amount of sodium can also put extra stress on your liver which will only worsen over time if you continue eating fast food excessively.
Creates Nerve Damage
Eating Fast food’s effects can create a lot of health problems for your body. According to Forbes, eating fast food has been linked with heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of cancer. And these are just some of your immediate health issues when you eat fast food frequently.
If you think it’s not doing much damage now, wait until years down the road when your body is affected by numerous issues. It’s one thing if your diet causes indigestion or a stomachache but it’s another issue entirely if it causes nerve damage or cancer in your body over time because many of these symptoms won’t occur until years after you’ve developed them.
Slows Muscle Development

A 2012 study revealed that people who regularly consume fast food have impaired calcium absorption and a lower bone mineral density than people who don’t eat it as often.
Calcium is an essential nutrient for building strong bones and stronger bones can translate into a reduced risk of fractures or osteoporosis later in life.

Affects Brain Function
Research has found that high-fat foods like fried chicken and french fries can alter your brain’s chemistry, as well as your mood. A study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that rats on a high-fat diet became depressed.
Their brains did not produce enough serotonin, a chemical responsible for maintaining positive moods. What’s more, other research suggests that consuming fat may interfere with neurotransmitters and brain chemicals related to mood control.
